Pre-K sets younger students up for success in the classroom by helping them develop kindergarten readiness skills through a structured, affordable curriculum. The program integrates typically developing children and those with special needs.

APS currently offers two preschool-only buildings:

Stewart Preschool (Main site): 1199 V. Odom Blvd, Akron, Ohio 44307
Essex Preschool: 1160 Winhurst Dr, Akron, Ohio 44313

Preschool is also offered at the following schools throughout the district:

  • Barber CLC
  • Case CLC
  • Crouse CLC
  • Mason CLC
  • North High School (Early Childhood Education program)
  • Reach Opportunity Center at Summit Lake
  • Rimer CLC
  • Robinson CLC
  • Sam Salem CLC
  • Windemere CLC

The Preschool/Early Learning Program (ELP) provides educational opportunities for children ages 3-5. The program is designed to meet the educational needs of typically developing children, as well as those with special needs, and is licensed by the Ohio Department of Education Office of Early Learning and School Readiness (OELSR).

Children who attend preschool are much better prepared than those who do not. Students who attend a structured program prior to entering kindergarten are more inclined to:

  • Follow class rules
  • Follow directions
  • Get along with peers and adults
  • Know their alphabet, colors and other key academic measures
  • Work independently

We offer morning and afternoon 3-year-old and Pre-K sessions, five days a week on the APS calendar. Full-day services may be available for children with specialized needs, such as hearing impairment and autism.

All APS preschool teachers hold bachelor’s degrees and are state licensed for preschool. Many hold a master’s degree.
